British Champions Day contributes to record £48M turnover for HKJC

Turnover on World Pool bet-types across the 12 races from Randwick, Caulfield and Ascot on Saturday reached a record high for a single day’s racing according to the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

A total of HK$424.1m (£48m) was staked from over 28 countries, eclipsing the previous record of HK$385.2m (approx. £38m) set when 12 races from the Queensland and Epsom Derby meetings took place under the World Pool banner earlier this year.

Ascot’s six races generated HK$200m (£19.75m) of the HK$424.1m, which is in line with 2023’s British Champions Day turnover of HK$202.7m.

Michael Fitzsimons, Executive Director, Wagering Products at the HKJC, said: “Saturday’s action certainly got the pulse racing. The big-field Group 1 contests from Randwick, Caulfield and Ascot lined up a perfect day of action for punters across the globe and we’re delighted to see turnover hit a new record high.

Bally’s Corp. has received all regulatory approvals and is ready to to implode the Tropicana on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 2:30AM local time. The demolition should be a traditional Las Vegas spectacle.

Watching the implosion might be easier done online than in person. Vegas Strip hotel room rates, especially those with a clear view of what’s left of the Tropicana, are surging in price. Other nearby hotels are more expensive than usual, but won’t guarantee your room can see the action (or feel the vibrations).

For as much of an exciting event this is being billed as, Bally’s isn’t able to offer a public viewing area due to safety restrictions of bringing down two large hotel towers, the first of which was built in 1957. Like Las Vegas casino implosions in the past, visitors won’t be able to stand too close to the hotel towers, for obvious reasons.

The late hour, however, will make it a little easier for law enforcement to block off Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard as needed with minimal traffic disruption.

Clark County has not yet shared plans on what sort of street access will or will not be available in the area surrounding the demolition zone.
